Sinus Lift Side Effects
While there are very few serious side effects that can occur both during and following a port huron sinus lift michigan procedure, the chances are very small, though not impossible.
One aspect of the procedure that may cause side effects is from the dental sedation. There are several different types of dental sedation that may be administered, the most common of which are oral sedation, Nitrous Oxide, and IV sedation. Common side effects of any of these types of sedation include:
- Dry mouth
- Vomiting or nausea
- Fogginess
- Amnesia
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Headache
In addition to the potential side effects you may experience from the anesthesia, you should also anticipate undergoing a recovery period, during which you will encounter multiple effects of the procedure having been performed which will begin to present after the effects of the administered anesthetic and sedation have worn off.
Side Effects Following the Sinus Lift Procedure
Immediately following the sinus lift procedure, you may begin to experience discomfort and swelling once the effects of the anesthesia wear off. Here are some of the most common side effects following a sinus lift procedure and how to manage them.
- Pain/Discomfort: If prescribed pain medication, take as directed and do not consume alcohol or drive a vehicle. Common side effects of narcotics include nausea, lightheadedness, and dizziness. If pain medication is not prescribed and you are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol can be taken.
- Infection: If you are prescribed antibiotics, be sure to take as prescribed until the prescription runs out in order to avoid infection.
- Bleeding: Mild bleeding can be managed using gauze pads, which should be replaced every thirty minutes until the bleeding stops. Wet and wring out the gauze so it is damp before placing over the area that is bleeding. Contact your periodontist if bleeding does not stop.
- Swelling: Place an ice pack over the swollen area for fifteen-minute intervals, fifteen minutes on and fifteen minutes off. Continue as often as necessary until the swelling subsides.
In order to ensure a faster recovery period, additional self-care steps you can take include setting aside several days of rest and relaxation to give your body a chance to heal. It is also a good idea to follow a soft food diet for at least a few days and avoid foods that are hot and/or crunchy. You should also not smoke or use a straw for at least three days and avoid or limit your alcohol intake. While brushing, use a soft bristle toothbrush, being especially careful over the surgical site, and when rinsing, do so gently, letting the water gently swirl then drip out of your mouth rather than forcefully spitting. Patients who regularly use a Waterpik as part of their self-care routine should avoid doing so until they have completely healed.
The healing process is different for everyone, but on average it will take 6 months for the bone graft to generate enough bone to support a dental implant.
