Periodontal Maintenance in Port Huron, MI

Periodontal disease often develops gradually, beginning with symptoms such as red, swollen, or tender gums and bleeding when brushing or flossing. This early stage, known as gingivitis, is caused by plaque and bacteria accumulating along the gumline and irritating the surrounding tissue. When identified early, gingivitis can often be reversed with improved at-home oral hygiene and professional dental care.

If the condition progresses, deeper pockets can form around the teeth, allowing bacteria and tartar to collect below the gumline. Over time, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, which may damage the gum tissue and bone that support the teeth and increase the risk of gum recession, loose teeth, and tooth loss.

At Periodontic Associates of Port Huron, we provide personalized periodontal care designed to help protect your gums, teeth, and supporting bone. In addition to periodontal maintenance, our office offers laser dentistry, bone grafting, dental implants, and a variety of other periodontal services.

What to Expect During Periodontal Maintenance

The steps involved in periodontal maintenance will vary from patient to patient depending upon your unique needs, but appointments typically begin with a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, plaque, and bone structure and a review of your medical and oral health history. It may also be necessary to take an X-Ray or other diagnostic exam to identify underlying issues and determine whether additional treatment is necessary. We will also measure the depth of your pockets to determine if periodontal disease has developed. Pockets with a depth of 4mm or greater may need to have a deep cleaning and/or scaling and root planing procedure performed to remove the bacteria and plaque that has accumulated. Following this, we will explain the state of your current health, steps you can take at home to maintain and improve your oral health, and if necessary, discuss necessary treatment options. Following this, your periodontal maintenance appointment will be complete.

Benefits of Periodontal Maintenance

There are many benefits you will enjoy by scheduling regular periodontal maintenance, including the following:

  • Progression of gum disease can be slowed or reversed
  • Deep cleaning/scaling and root planing will remove tartar that cannot be removed through traditional brushing methods
  • Reduced inflammation allows your gums to heal and reduces your risk of developing other inflammatory-related conditions
  • Protects your overall oral health and significantly reduces your risk of developing periodontal disease
  • Maintaining good oral health will preserve/improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile
  • Corrects halitosis caused by periodontal disease
  • Can result in the diagnosis of other health issues, such as diabetes, kidney issues, and/or oral cancer.

Aftercare Instructions Following Periodontal Maintenance

While these regular appointments are a critical component to enjoying good oral health, the type of self-care you follow at home is even more important. In addition to brushing and flossing twice daily, eat healthy, avoid the use of tobacco, and take steps to avoid being sedentary and reduce high levels of stress, as both are linked as underlying causes of systemic issues, including periodontal disease. By making a commitment to following a consistent oral health routine and living a healthy lifestyle, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease and enjoy improved overall oral and physical health.
