Periodontal Maintenance in Port Huron, MI

Although periodontal disease is an issue that affects over half the population and is only increasing in regularity, many people are still unfamiliar or uncertain about what periodontal disease is, what causes it to occur, and what you can do to correct or prevent it. Periodontal disease is often a gradual process, with early symptoms presenting in the form of swollen, red, and/or tender gums or gums that bleed easily when brushing. This stage of the disease is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis occurs when pockets in your gums deepen, which allows for more bacteria to collect and eventually harden. Gingivitis can typically be reversed by modifying oral health care routines and scheduling an appointment for a deep cleaning, during which plaque and calculus is removed using specialized tools.

Following this, it will be important to schedule regular periodontal maintenance (at least every six months) so we can measure the depth of your pockets and provide additional treatment as needed. If gingivitis is not treated, it will eventually progress to periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. At this stage in the disease, symptoms will increase in severity and may result in issues such as jawbone deterioration and tooth loss. If periodontal disease reaches this stage, it may be necessary to schedule periodontal maintenance every three or four months.

What to Expect During Periodontal Maintenance

The steps involved in periodontal maintenance will vary from patient to patient depending upon your unique needs, but appointments typically begin with a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, plaque and bone structure and review of your medical and oral health history. It may also be necessary to take an X-Ray or other diagnostic exam to identify underlying issues and determine whether additional treatment is necessary. We will also measure the depth of your pockets to determine if periodontal disease has developed. Pockets with a depth of 4mm or greater may need to have a deep cleaning and/or scaling and root planning procedure performed to remove the bacteria and plaque that has accumulated. Following this, we will explain the state of your current health, steps you can take at home to maintain and improve your oral health, and if necessary, discuss necessary treatment options. Following this, your periodontal maintenance appointment will be complete.

Benefits of Periodontal Maintenance

There are many benefits you will enjoy by scheduling regular periodontal maintenance, including the following:

Aftercare Instructions Following Periodontal Maintenance

While these regular appointments are a critical component to enjoying good oral health, the type of self-care you follow at home is even more important. In addition to brushing and flossing twice daily, eat healthy, avoid use of tobacco, and take efforts to avoid being sedentary and reduce high levels of stress, as both are linked as underlying causes of systemic issues, including periodontal disease. By making a commitment to following a consistent oral health routine and living a healthy lifestyle, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease and enjoy improved overall oral and physical health.
