Wilckodontics in Port Huron, MI

Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (AOO), commonly known as Wilckodontics, combines periodontal treatment with orthodontics to help teeth move more efficiently. The technique involves modifying the bone surrounding the teeth and typically placing bone grafting material before orthodontic forces are applied. This temporarily increases bone remodeling, which can significantly reduce the amount of time needed to move the teeth compared with orthodontic treatment alone.

Wilckodontics is performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment rather than replacing it. Depending on the patient’s treatment plan, braces or another orthodontic appliance are used to guide the teeth into their desired positions while the surrounding bone is undergoing accelerated remodeling.

Potential benefits of Wilckodontics include:

  • Shorter orthodontic treatment time
  • Increased width and support of the surrounding alveolar bone
  • The ability to facilitate certain orthodontic tooth movements
  • Improved periodontal support in appropriately selected patients
  • A coordinated approach to improving the alignment and appearance of the smile

At Periodontic Associates of Port Huron, we work with each patient to determine whether Wilckodontics may be appropriate for their individual orthodontic and periodontal needs. In addition to Wilckodontics, our office provides periodontal maintenance, laser dentistry, bone grafting, dental implants, and a variety of other periodontal services.

The Wilckodontics Procedure

Prior to scheduling a procedure for Wilckodontics, we will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, plaque, and bone structure and review your medical and oral health history. If necessary, will also take an X-Ray or other diagnostic exams to ensure you are a good candidate for Wilckodontics and/or identify any other underlying issues. If it is determined that you are a good candidate for Wilckodontics, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled, during which the following will occur.

  • A local anesthetic and/or dental sedation is administered to reduce pain, discomfort, and/or anxiety during the procedure.
  • Your gum tissue is pulled back to allow access to the alveolar bone.
  • The alveolar bone is cut, and part of the bone surface is removed. Removal of the bone causes the bone to demineralize, which makes it softer and allows teeth to reach their optimal position more easily. The bone will gradually heal itself over the next three to eight weeks and will end up being even stronger than it was before.
  • Once this is complete, the area is sutured shut, and the traditional braces are placed.
  • Once the braces have been tested for proper fit, the Wilckodontics realignment process can begin.

Aftercare Following Wilckodontics

Following Wilckodontics, it is essential that you closely follow the aftercare instructions provided by your periodontist. In addition to following these instructions, additional steps you can take to minimize post-procedural issues include:

  • Discomfort or pain can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain-relieving medication. Follow recommended dosages, and if prescribed painkillers, take as directed until the prescription runs out.
  • Swelling can be controlled by placing ice packs over the affected area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time. It is important not to leave the ice pack on for too long, as doing so reduces blood flow, which can slow the healing process.
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods and follow a soft food diet (yogurt, pudding, applesauce, soup) for at least one week. You may begin to slowly reintroduce harder foods as discomfort subsides and healing progresses.
  • Rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours, possibly longer depending on the severity of your case.
  • Follow meticulous oral hygiene self-care once your braces are placed. It is easy for food particles to become trapped in the metal braces, which can increase your risk of developing oral health issues. To prevent this from happening, make a point of brushing after every meal (this includes snacks) and continue following standard oral health care.
