Full Mouth Reconstruction

When patients have serious oral health issues, either due to trauma, periodontal disease, or genetic predisposition, it may be necessary to create a treatment plan for full mouth reconstruction.

Full Mouth Reconstruction in Port Huron, MI

Patients with extensive oral health concerns caused by trauma, periodontal disease, tooth loss, or other conditions may benefit from full mouth reconstruction. Rather than referring to a single procedure, full mouth reconstruction combines multiple treatments into a coordinated plan designed to restore the health, function, and appearance of the smile.

Because every patient has different needs, treatment plans can vary significantly and may take place over several months or longer. Depending on the condition of the teeth, gums, and supporting bone, a full mouth reconstruction may include:

  • Dental implants
  • Bridges, crowns, veneers, and inlays or onlays
  • Crown lengthening
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Bone or gum grafting
  • LANAP laser treatment
  • Periodontal maintenance

At Periodontic Associates of Port Huron, we work closely with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan based on their oral health, treatment needs, and long-term goals. In addition to full mouth reconstruction, our office provides periodontal maintenance, laser dentistry, bone grafting, dental implants, and a variety of other periodontal services.

What to Expect During the Full Mouth Reconstruction Process

To determine your full mouth reconstruction plan, we will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, plaque, and bone structure and review your medical and oral health history. It will also be necessary to take an X-Ray or other diagnostic exam to identify underlying issues and determine if you have a sufficient amount of jawbone to support implants, and if so, how many implants should be placed and the optimal placement of those implants. Following this, we will discuss what treatment options are available and develop a plan that is aligned with your treatment goals. We will also provide estimates for anticipated costs of procedures and determine a schedule that is convenient for you.

How Much Does Full Mouth Reconstruction or Rehabilitation Typically Cost?

At Periodontic Associates of Port Huron, we are committed to making sure you understand what the cost of treatment will be and will do everything we can to help you maximize your dental health benefits and explore third-party financing plans if necessary. Aftercare Instructions Following Full Mouth Reconstruction

Due to the prolonged nature of the full mouth reconstruction process, it is essential that you closely follow the aftercare instructions provided by your periodontist. In addition to following these instructions, additional steps you can take to minimize post-procedural issues include:

  • Discomfort or pain can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain-relieving medication. Follow recommended dosages, and if prescribed painkillers, take as directed until the prescription runs out.
  • Swelling can be controlled by placing ice packs over the affected area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time. It is important not to leave the ice pack on for too long, as doing so reduces blood flow, which can slow the healing process.
  • Avoid using a straw, rinsing, or spitting for 24 hours.
  • Do not brush or floss for the first 24 hours. When you resume your oral hygiene routine, practice gentle brushing techniques as the area heals. You may begin flossing your natural teeth, but do not use floss on the dental implant.
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods and follow a soft food diet (yogurt, pudding, applesauce, soup) for at least one week. You may begin to slowly reintroduce harder foods as discomfort subsides and healing progresses.
  • Rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours, possibly longer depending on the severity of your case.

If the underlying reason for full mouth reconstruction is due to periodontal disease, it is important to improve your level of self-care moving forward to reduce your risk of needing similar procedures in the future. Schedule regular periodontal maintenance every six months or with greater frequency depending upon the severity of your case. These visits allow us to perform a thorough examination of your oral health, and if any issue is detected, begin treating that issue as soon as possible. Additionally, we can monitor the status of any dental implants that were placed and provide a professional cleaning to eliminate plaque and calculus using specialized instruments that normal brushing methods cannot remove.

While these regular appointments are a critical component to enjoying good oral health, the type of self-care you follow at home is even more important. In addition to brushing and flossing twice daily, eat healthy, avoid use of tobacco, and take efforts to avoid being sedentary and reduce high levels of stress, as both are linked as underlying causes of systemic issues, including periodontal disease. By making a commitment to following a consistent oral health routine and living a healthy lifestyle, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease and enjoy improved overall oral and physical health.
