What is AlloDerm?
AlloDerm is comprised of healthy tissues which are processed to ensure assimilation with the gum tissues of the patient. Traditionally, gum grafting involves taking healthy gum tissue from elsewhere in the patient’s mouth. Usually, this tissue is in the roof of the mouth, which requires an additional incision. Additional incisions require additional recovery time, additional exposure to infection, and more discomfort. Providing the patient external or donated tissue allows the procedure to take less time, and address more comprehensive issues, like multiple tissue grafts.
Why would you need Tissue grafts?
Patients who require gum tissue grafting or repair are typically patients who are experiencing advanced gum disease and gum recession. Tissue grafting is used to patch or re-secure areas where gum recession is so severe that it exposes the tooth roots. Tissue grafts help to prevent tooth loss, protect the teeth and gums, and eliminate pain and discomfort for the patient. They also significantly help to develop the aesthetic of the patients smile, providing them security and self esteem.
What causes receding gums?
Receding gums are caused by gum disease and infection. Some disease is genetic, but a majority is actually due to harmful bacteria finding its’ way into the gumline. Once the bacteria has entered the gumline, it will fester and grow, creating space between the gum tissue and the surface of the tooth. This space becomes a community for the bacteria, wherein they break down tissue and expand their control over the area. Bacterial infections must be treated by your dentist through restorative hygiene efforts, and then tissues like AlloDerm can be grafted as replacement.
Why Choose AlloDerm Grafts?
AlloDerm is essentially free tissue mass. The cells are removed through processing to provide patients with compatible free tissue that can be affixed wherever necessary. AlloDerm grafts have been used millions of times with a very high success rate. Few complications are reported and the presence of available tissues makes multiple grafts achievable in one session. There is also the added benefit for the patient, none of their own gum tissues need to be removed. This means the incisions made are only necessary where gum is being restored, and recovery is usually an easier process.
How can you receive AlloDerm grafts?
Speak with your dentist about gum recession and gum disease. Get a comprehensive x ray and investigate any necessary restorative hygiene practices. Then ask about whether or not grafting is a usable option for your condition. Your dentist will probably recommend you see a periodontist, who can then walk you through the grafting process and the benefits you can enjoy moving forward.
After the Procedure
Be sure to monitor any incisions closely for signs of infection or bacteria. After meals, be sure to promptly take hygienic action. Using mouthwash, flossing, and regular brushing is going to be valuable in protecting your mouth during recovery periods. With some time and attention, your gums will heal fully and tissues will integrate, creating a cohesive and healthy ecosystem for your teeth to thrive again.
