Benefits of Alloderm
Think of AlloDerm as free tissue, which has been processed to remove and cells or elements previously occupying the tissue itself. It can kind of act as a train track for the cells and blood that run through your gums; when one section has degraded, a new one can be placed to continue transport operations. Moreover the tissue can help secure or re-secure teeth within the gumline, providing you a security in your smile and a healthy jawline.
Why you may need gum grafts
Patients who require gum grafting often have a history of gum infection or disease. This is often a product of dental hygiene. When the areas between the teeth are not cleaned accurately, bits of food and other organic material accumulate and break down. Bacteria that lives in your mouth attaches to this broken down material and feeds, multiplying and creating a community. The bacteria will force its’ way into your gumline, inflammation and destroying healthy tissue, causing bleeding and tissue loss. The tissue will eventually shirk down your tooth, exposing roots and compromising the security of your teeth.
Benefits of Gum Grafts
Gum grafts help to reallocate tissue resources within your mouth’s ecosystem. There is usually an abundance of tissue on the roof of the mouth, as there is little chance of gum infection in that area. Tissue can be surgically removed and attached to areas along the gumline that require reinforcement. This helps to resecure the blood transport layer, and physically strengthens the resolve of the teeth. It can also cover exposed tooth roots, providing some comfort and protection for the patient to an area that may be very painful. Because the tissue must be surgically removed from another area, this requires a secondary incision and recovery area.
Benefits of AlloDerm
AlloDerm is almost like a gum stem cell, it is clean tissue which can be readily applied to any area that requires support. This is a great option for patient’s who do not have an abundance of healthy gum tissue available for extraction. AlloDerm also has another benefit due to the availability of tissue; multiple grafts can be placed in a single procedure. Wherein normally tissue would be extracted and placed, and you would have two sites healing–multiple areas may be addressed without requiring the tissue extraction. This makes the entire process quicker, and your recovery can be focused on the areas your doctor worked on.
Recovery
Pay special attention the areas affected, and be conscious of how they feel. If the gums begin to feel very warm, it may be an early sign of infection. You will need to be diligent with hygiene, but not aggressive. Care for the area as you would a scar or stitch on your skin, keep it clean but do not aggravate the healing process. Watch for signs of infection or complications; redness, swelling, discharge, bleeding, foul smells, intense pain.
With some time, and attention, your new tissues will acclimate and provide the same support and structure you are used to. You will be able to smile and enjoy all your favorite foods with no further complications.
